Session 1: Books of the Old Testament
This session provides a foundational understanding of the Old Testament, focusing on its structure, organization, and purpose. The Old Testament consists of 39 books, which are traditionally categorized into three main sections:
- Historical Books (Genesis – Esther): These books record God’s work in history, from the creation of the world to the formation of Israel as a nation. They include key narratives such as the Exodus, the conquest of Canaan, the reign of kings, and the exile to Babylon.
- Poetical Books (Job – Song of Solomon): These books focus on wisdom, worship, and human experience. Psalms is a collection of songs and prayers, Proverbs offers practical wisdom, and Job explores human suffering and faith in God.
- Prophetical Books (Isaiah – Malachi): These books contain the messages of God’s prophets, who called Israel to repentance and foretold future events, including the coming of the Messiah and God’s final judgment.
This session also introduces memorization techniques to help participants retain the order of the books and their key themes. By the end of this lesson, students will have a clearer understanding of how the Old Testament is structured and why it remains relevant today.
